The Great Migration Painting 1-7-08

As you can see from the detail image above I have been working hard painting al those stripes and I only have the little foal just beneath the left foreground zebra to paint. He seems to be struggling a lot in all that deep water - hope he makes it across!!! ha.....

The Great Migration Painting

As you can see from the latest painting update above I am working my way down the painting. All those stripes can make your eyes go real funny, so I can only paint 2 zebra at a time before having a break. Ha... Not too many sessions left now before all the painting will be blocked in with it's 1st coat of oil paint. Then the real work begins- bringing this painting to life!

Latest Update 3 - (Above)

More blocking in done, I'm painting various areas of the canvas just to get a feel of what is right, just wait till I have to paint all those stripes!!! ha... Remember this is still at a VERY early stage and everything will be painted over at least another two times.

The great migration - Update 2 (Above)

The latest update (above) shows the completed basic under painting, this under painting will now act as my map / guide for the oil paints later on.

Latest Wildlife Art - On the Easel (Above)

After weeks of working out the composition for this painting and placing the 40 or so animals I am finally at the stage where I have transferred the drawing to the canvas. Phew! The Great Migration is such a spectacular event and I wanted to paint one of the most critical moments for the animals - the crossing itself, as the painting develops you will see within the painting moments of calm and also moments of fear as the wildebeest and zebra notice the giant croc for the 1st time.

The great migration painting - wildlife art currently on the easel.
